The Problem

The IRS-regulated Required Minimum Distribution platform — serving 6M+ retirement accounts and $150B+ in assets — was running on a legacy mainframe that needed to move to the cloud without disrupting a system with real tax consequences for retirees.

The Architecture

An event-driven microservices architecture on AWS — Lambda for compute, DynamoDB for transactional data, S3 + Parquet for analytical query performance, RDS for audit trails, EC2 for remaining compute needs. Independently owned 350+ REST APIs spanning pre-login, account management, and third-party RMD integrations, and built the complete Angular frontend powering compliant self-service distribution workflows.

The Constraints

IRS regulatory rules governing distribution timing and calculations, a legacy mainframe dependency to migrate off of cleanly, and scale — 6 million accounts that can't tolerate errors.

The Outcome

6M+ retirement accounts and $150B+ in assets modernized onto cloud infrastructure, with RDS-backed audit trails underpinning every transaction and every production distribution channel nationwide.
